Congratulations to Gerry and Loretta Reeder of Stargate Arabians on the arrival of three very special foals! First up was a chestnut colt, sired by Afires Heir and out of the Mattaffair daughter, Mattalivia; the great Promotion daughter, Nitemotion had a bay colt, sired by Baske Afire; and the last foal of the year for Stargate was a bay colt, sired by HA Toskcan Sun and out of the IXL Noble Express daughter, Noble Contessa!

Throwback Thursday Trivia

TBT... What do Jackie Onassis, Warren Beatty, and *Elkana++ have in common? It was 1976 and all three attended the sale put on by Mike Nichols at his farm in Bridgewater, Connecticut. The 31 lots sold for $913,350. In addition to setting a record for the highest gross in history at that time, the sale also set a record for the highest selling horse at auction: 24 year old Aude Espourteille of Deor Farm in Butte Falls, Oregon purchased the National Champion Mare, *Elkana++ for $185,000.

With over 3,000 people in attendance, the sale kicked off as the band opened with "Hello, Mrs. Robinson" - a tribute to The Graduate (1967), which earned Mike Nichols an Oscar for Best Director in 1968. The first horse presented was *Elkin++, followed by Talagato, and then the great *Elkana++... Most in the crowd were surprised to see the bidding begin at $50,000 for the beautiful snow-white mare, as she bounded through the billowing fog which blanketed a royal red carpet of shavings (imported from Poland, no less). As the orchestra moved through a medley, including "I Enjoy Being a Girl" and "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody," the bidding quickly progressed to $150,000, and then only gradually, as it increased by $5,000 increments until it reached $185,000, at which point the 24 year old Aude Espourteille became the very ecstatic new owner. Aude took the lead line of her new mare after Mike Nichols and Candice Bergen awarded *Elkana++ with her Legion of Merit.

Among other highlights of the sale was the purchase of Talagato who sold to Lewis Allen of Virginia for $60,000. Despite Warren Beatty who reportedly seemed to enjoy entertaining the thought of Jackie Onassis riding a horse back to Manhattan, she placed a bid of $15,000 for Talisman NA, the 2 year old Talagato son out of *Elkana++, who went on to sell to Gerald Donoghue of Texas. The beautiful *Bask++ daughter, Silhoulette+ sold to Tom Lazor and Bill Pereira for $50,000. Amythyst, another *Bask++ daughter, sold to Jerome Castle for $43,000. The Negatiw daughter, *Persefona sold to Alduro Arabian Farm for $66,000. The Ego daughter, *Kantyka sold to Richard Henley Arabians for $50,000. The *Eter son, Back Street who was only a 2 year old at the time, sold to Soderberg Arabians for $35,000 and *Alondraa closed out the show by selling to Alduro Arabian Farm for $45,000.... After all was done the 31 lots brought in a total of $913,350.

While these prices may not be notable by today's standards, the sale set a record at that time and the very elaborate production was surely a sign of many great things to come. By the end of the night no one would dispute that the bar had been raised and the stage set...

Congratulations to Helen Lacey Reed and Scott & Michelle Harris, owners of the newly crowned Reserve National Champion English Pleasure Open winner, HA TOSKCAN SUN who was ridden to the win by Jim Stachowski! What a beautiful performance to close out the show in a very competitive class!

As a side note, the exceptionally talented mare, Expressly Bella who was named National Champion in the same class, is scheduled to be bred to Toskcan next year by owners Karen and Mallory Mahan for a 2015 foal! And also on the way up for Scott and Michelle Harris is the talented yearling filly HA California Sage, who's sired by Toskcan and out of Expressly Bella's dam, Colorado Sage! At this year's Youth National Championship show in Albuquerque, New Mexico Kendyl Peters and B Loved were crowned National Champions in Purebred English Pleasure JTR 14 to 18, while Hannah Bell earned a total of SIX Top Ten awards at her ninth and final Youth Nationals Championship Show! Hannah earned three of her Top Ten titles with Johnnie Quest++// in Purebred Show Hack JOTR 18 & Under, Purebred Mounted Native Costume JOTR 18 & Under, and Purebred Mounted Native Costume JTR 14 to 18. Hannah's three other Top Ten titles were earned aboard TFA Zimitup++/ in Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure JOTR & JTR 14 to 18 and Half-Arabian Ladies Side Saddle JTR 18 & Under.
